When I first got a phone call last summer from a magazine guy trying to give me the "pitch" about some car that I just had to be involved with I was more than a little skeptical. You the type right, "Of this thing is gonna be awesome, it will be on the cover, blah, blah blah. You see, we get numerous sponsorship proposals every day. Some are not yet ready for corporate support, others have potential if the money doesn't run out and some have true ROI. Rarely do I get no-brainers, sure fire winners for the company. In fact I can count the number of times that I have been lucky enough to get something special across my desk.

If I ever get another proposal from the Top Tuner Team north of the border then I can most certainly chalk up another success. Now I know what you are thinking...
Canadians really... Canadians? Let me just say these Canucks are for real and no joke! For anyone that has seen the vehicles they build in magazines, video or in person can attest, they are STUNNING!

The team consists of an eclectic group of guys that epitomize professionalism, expertise and enthusiasm for the automotive industry. Headed up by Tajai Das and flanked by Edmund Manasan, Serge Leger and Chris Nankoo this crew combines a hard to find combination of extremely talented and motivated people. The Top Tuner Team of Canada continues to build the most impressive import lifestyle/show vehicles today and absolutely set the standard that all other teams are trying to reach. So congratulations to the gang for just winning the HIN Boston Ultimate Best in Show.

Believe me when I tell you that I have seen some pretty crazy stuff in my employment here at Turbonetics. People are always doing something crazy and incredible with their rides. Sometimes it is a combination of both. While we don't think making 1650HP from a 427HP engine is necessarily crazy, I do think that driving that same engine/vehicle around on the street like its a Honda Civic is another thing entirely. The ability to tame an engine that makes that much power calmly idling and staying cool at street lights is amazing. Major props to Nelson and the incedible engineering behind this cool ride. I still can't believe that this incredible engine got stuck inside an old hoopty Mazda.

I gotta hand it to the guys over at Nelson Racing though, they always deliver some sick machinery no matter what it is. My eyes still can't believe the sight of this little Rx-7 laying down all that rubber. It is powered by twin Turbonetics Ceramic Ball Bearing turbos with all the trick Nelson Racing stuff to go along with them.
Check out the video below and make sure to stop by the Nelson site to see any other goodies they got laying around. http://www.nelsonracingengines.com/

Well we are at the season start of yet another form of motorsports. This time it is Formula D and we are in mmm sort-of-overcast-cold-but-sunny-still better-than-most-of-the-country's-weather Long Beach, CA. There is a good buzz at the venue with so many new cars in the field no-one really knows what to expect to start the year. It should be a very interesting qualifying session.

After the great response that the country showed at the box office with Fast & Furious I was hoping that the Cali natives would show up in force for this weekends opening Formula D event. With brand new cars everywhere, a new format of a top 32 competition and the Long Beach Grand Prix next weekend there are a ton of reasons why this coming weekend should have a good turnout and success. I love that Jim Liaw and his team have poured everything that they have into this series and Turbonetics is proud to be a part of at least a handful of events. Good job guys and keep up the great work.

Turbonetics has four competitors that are trying to make the field. Rhys Millen in the new Hyundai Genesis, Kyle Mohan in his new Mazda Rx-8, Casper Canul in an S14 and Chris Milano in a crazy LS1 powered Nissan 350Z. We are so pleased to be a part of each of their race programs. Thank you for trusting in Turbonetics power.

Here is to a great 2009 Formula D season and we hope to see you at the events near you.

I completely understand that there are quite a few doubters and haters out there that would love nothing more than the Fast & Furious franchise to fail miserabley and die. We actually have a couple of those people right here in our own building. You know the type right, the ones too good to go see a movie or like a band because they were doing it first or they liked the group before they "sold out" or wearing some goofy outfit that took the country 2 years to actually accept but just made them look like a dork for 18 months.

Not that we listen to these people or other haters like them or anything but it made me upset that in this unprecented time in history for the automotive industry, with manufacturers of cars and car parts alike dying and falling to the wayside, people that we communicate with in person, on the phone or on-line would be hating on anything that is bringing exposure and feel good thoughts to cars and their culture. High performance, aftermarket parts using, make more horsepower, our livelyhoods depends on types of cars. That is unacceptable!

Look, it is not about whether you think Paul Walker is a kook and should have stopped acting after "The Skulls" or not, or if Vin Diesel's best work was in Saving Private Ryan or that you hate that something you love such as the sport compact lifestyle or muscle car scene you are personally involved in get twisted and made to look a little silly on the big screen. We did love the ladies in the flick though, Gggrrrrrr! It is about re-creating a community of auto enthusiasts and getting this country to get excited again about its own roots and history of why we are all in this industry in the first place. To really debate import vs. domestic and displacement vs. replacement and go away smiling and believing what you will. And trust me, it is not about MPG and lithion-ion powered tin cans.

I guess what I am asking is that people remember the feeling of what it is like to get your drivers license and pull up to a stop light and absolutely be disgusted in the fact that a 75 year old lady is driving the identical bone stock Honda or Ford or Toyota or GM or whatver ride you are in. How much you couldn't stand that your car has the same wheels as everyone else. To go to the track for the first time and stage your car with the back wheels and be so excited to bolt something on the car to reduce a timeslip by .2 tenths of a second. It is a fire in the pit of our bellies that never seems to go away and I am so honored to be able to answer peoples dreams here at Turbonetics. The pure joy of delivering go fast goodies and performance parts to people is remarkable.

Fast & Furious 4 pulled in over $72 million dollars this opening weekend (http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Movi....ew/index.html).

Trust me people, it is no joke when a movie shatters box office records in a global recession and time when people are slashing their entertainment budgets every day. Millions and millions of people chose to go see the movie and I am so very glad they did. Besides the fact that I believed in the project enough to get our company brand placed, I am glad because people are talking about cars, and fixing up their own and going to car shows tied to the movie. All wonderful things for the industry and people that I love. So don't hate, it is a great 1 hour & 40 minutes to be entertained, watch some good looking people on the silver screen and think about all the great things that we can do to our rides. Go and check it out cause with the box office breaking records you know number FF5 is already on its way...

On the DynoJet at Motiva Performance Engineering, the Hellion turbo kit made 1,032 hp and 976 lb-ft on pump gas.Driving a car with a legitimate 1,000 hp on the street is nearly impossible without killing yourself and every innocent bystander around, but oh boy is it a lot of fun. Fifteen years ago, making that kind of power meant a 2,000-rpm idle, horrible street manners, and 4-mpg fuel economy. Thanks to the wonders of turbochargers and EFI technology, it's now fairly easy to make four-digit power--but you still have to use expensive race gas to get there, right?

Not anymore.John Urist, the three-time consecutive NMRA Super Street Outlaw champion, has a company called Hellion Power Systems that specializes in turbo kits for late-model Mustangs. Hellion has systems from mild, everyday street drivers to full-on 7-second race cars, but the ones that piqued our interest are his two new kits that bolt on to stock engines and make ridiculous power on pump gas and with near-stock driveability. Urist had been telling us for some time that he had an '03 Cobra kit called the Hellraiser that makes more than 1,000 hp at the tires on pump gas, so we flew to the shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to call his bluff...
More... The secret is compound boost and water/methanol injection. The Hellraiser kit uses two 61mm Turbonetics turbos that blow into the stock Cobra supercharger. The turbos send 13 psi of boost through an air-to-air intercooler and then to the blower, which compounds the boost to 24.4 psi and pushes it through the stock intercooler (which is mounted directly under the blower) and into the engine. To allow that kind of boost and power safely on pump gas requires a Snow Performance water/methanol injection system, which Hellion set up with six nozzles firing into the induction tube just before the blower, and they are fed by three pumps and an 8-gallon fuel cell mounted in the trunk. Without the methanol injection, the system can still make nearly 1,000 hp, but the engine is on the ragged edge of destruction.

The blue lines show a dyno curve of the same system without the factory supercharger, such as on a '96 to '02 Cobra.

Note that it made the same peak power but with far less area under the curve than the kit with the supercharger. The best thing about the arrangement is it makes that power with a bone-stock engine. The factory '03/'04 Cobra DOHC engine has been proven many times over to be robust enough to handle 1,000 hp, so it doesn't need better pistons, rods, or anything. If you want 1,000 hp, the only requirement is 75 lb/hr injectors, which are optional in the kit. This same kit will also fit all '96 to '04 V-8 Mustangs but obviously won't make the same power curve on those cars that didn't come with a supercharger from the factory. The Hellraiser kit retails for $7,495 and requires but does not come with an aftermarket UPR tubular K-member to clear the turbo plumbing, a better clutch to handle the power (this car uses an ACT twin-disc clutch), and a fuel system that can support 1,000 hp (Weldon pump, filter, and regulator used here). The water-injection system is also optional. That stuff all adds up, so expect several thousand more dollars on top of the kit price if you really want 1,000 hp.The Hellraiser Cobra kit is the big power deal, but Urist has also developed a system for the GT500 that puts an incredible 712 hp and 718 lb-ft to the tires but requires fewer parts and is even more civil on the street. We drove that one, too, and the car is an animal. But the best part is it bolts on in a day and uses the stock exhaust, fuel system, and clutch. At $5,999.95, the price is also competitive with the popular supercharger kits on the market, but the horsepower and torque curves are far better.

Here's the orientation of the turbos on the '03 and '04 Cobra. With the front fascia installed, you can't see them. The air-to-air intercooler mounts between the stock heat exchanger and the radiator, so it's hidden, too. The arrows point to the TurboSmart electronic boost control solenoids.

Here's the plumbing under the car. The kit uses the stock exhaust manifolds. Note the UPR K-member.

OK, so what's it like to drive a 1,000hp car? It's surprisingly easy, but only to a point. One thousand horsepower is the new "gotta have it" war cry. Thanks to dyno shootouts and magazine stories covering big-power cars, engine builders are constantly getting phone calls from customers wanting to make 1,000 hp on the street. The problem is, 95 percent of those people have no idea what a legit 600 hp is, let alone 1,000. The usual result is they get the engine, scare the hell out of themselves, then call the builder back asking how to detune it to a more sane power level. We've heard the story 100 times. We had a chance to drive both of the cars in this story, and on the street you can't tell a whole lot of difference since they both blow the tires into clouds of smoke as soon as you jump on the throttle. Both cars are shockingly driveable, however. The red car is louder, since it has a full 3-inch Bassani exhaust system, a big Weldon fuel pump that makes some noise, and a pretty stout clutch pedal, but honestly it's no louder than many typical street Mustangs with performance mufflers. You'd never in a million years realize how much power was under the hood . . . until you nail it. At that point, it's "Katie bar the door, this mother is on a roll!" Even with tires at full blaze, it pulls like a Pro Stocker and doesn't quit until you lift, at which point comes the beautiful music from the wastegates. And since it's still a stock suspension car, it drives like a typical Mustang with stiffer springs.

This is the meat of the kit, with the two 61mm Turbonetics turbochargers, intercooler, and all the plumbing.

John Urist holds 61mm Turbonetics turbos.

The GT500 is even better. The sensation of speed is similar, but other than the turbochargers and a pair of Bassani mufflers bolted to the stock 2.5-inch exhaust, this car is all stock. You cannot tell that anything has been done to it; it drives exactly like a new GT500 and you could literally hand the keys to your 80-year-old grandmother to drive to the store--it's that nice. Problem is, if Granny hits the gas too hard, it's game over. And that's the problem with having so much power in a street car. It's exceptionally easy to light the tires at speed and lose control, causing bad things to happen if you don't understand how to drive it. Someone who has never driven a truly fast car honestly has no idea what this is all about and can hurt themselves. You have to sneak up on full-throttle in small increments to get used to the car, but even then you'd better know how to pedal it. But once you do, man, it's a ton of fun.Neither car has a rollcage and both are riding on street tires, so they'll never see a dragstrip--which is good, since if they ever did, they'd be forcibly removed from the property after the first pass. If you were serious about going fast, a set of sticky tires and some aftermarket rear suspension parts will make them hook. With enough tuning, that would put the GT500 very close to the 9s and the red car in the 8s. But these are not race cars--they're street sleepers. They're meant to scare your friends and annihilate anything that pulls up next to you. Your neighbor have a Ferrari Enzo?

Turbonetics was thrilled to receive a call from 0-60 Magazine to help them transform a new Hyundai Genesis Coupe into a drifting machine. Gary Castillo worked closely with our team to select a custom Turbonetics Ceramic Ball Bearing turbocharger and huge Spearco front mount intercooler for the car. Gary and his team at Design Craft in southern California performed an incredible job fabricating and building the beautiful new Genesis Coupe in such a short period of time. The result is a car that gets sideways as well as it looks. We can't wait to see the full article in the upcoming 0-60 Magazine on newstands at the end of April.

Article from Autoblog.com

Nestled within that bodacious badonkadonk is a twin-turbocharged, Acura-sourced 3.5-liter V6 mounted amidships. Depending on the spec, the Scorpion can be had in two flavors – 450 or 650 horsepower – each equipped with the company's proprietary H2GO hydrogen injection system.

The idea behind the setup is to produce enough hydrogen on board and inject it into the fuel stream to get the benefits of the gas (increased fuel economy, higher octane and reduced emissions) without having to top up at non-existent hydrogen refueling stations. Combined with the ultra-efficient V6, Ronn Motors claims a boost in mileage of around 20 to 30% and a substantial drop in C02 output. With only 2,200 pounds weighing the Scorpion down, the company estimates fuel mileage at around 40 miles-per-gallon....

Tech briefing and green cred aside, we fired up the engine and the bent-six's siren song was barely muffled by the Turbonetics turbos. We engaged the stiff clutch, selected first on the weighty shifter, let up on the left pedal and got underway...

To anyone out there that loves racing and all types of motorsports please join with me in a moment of silence to give well wishes and prayers for the safety of racers everywhere as we kick off the 2009 racing season. Yes, I know I am a few weeks late since there have been a few races going for the past few weekends but I say this as unselfishly as I possibly can, none of those racers on tv are really my friends. My friends get set to start racing this season with the NMRA season kick-off event in Bradenton, FL. and other sanctioned events with other people will follow shortly after.

What brings on this very grounding post? I have unfortunately been at the starting line twice when people I knew were involved in tragic endings and I never want to feel that horri
