350z TN kit question
Hey guys....My car is in the finishing stages of its build and i've encountered a bit of a problem. I had the TN kit (for 03 350z), and have since decided to build the motor with the help of the pro's at Sound Performance. I originally planned to get rid of my 60-1 turbo, and upgrade to the 62-1 or T66, however after consulting with SP they've come to the conclusion that even if I did upgrade the turbo, it would have little to no effect due to the small diameter of the downpipe (if anything, a bigger turbo will just make things laggier and laggier). I guess my question is, how many people have upgraded to the 62-1 or T66 with success, and believed it was worth the money spent. Im really looking to make close to 600whp on the pump, and unfortuantely may not be able to do it with this kit. Any input would help. Thanks!

Also, in terms of making the power, ill also be upgrading injectors, engine management, and wastegate...Im really more concerned about the turbo itself, and if upgrading will be effective for the money. Thanks!

Well I hate to disagree with SP but another shop has already made very close to that power with the original 60-1 turbo that comes with the kit. In fact the only thing they swapped out on the kit was the wastegate. Here's the link:

526/569 with the stock unmodified kit aside from the wastegate and the original 60-1 turbo proves 600 is possible with just a compressor wheel upgrade.

We had actually brought up that build in one of our discussions about what to do next (they're sick numbers)...We had also discussed just upgrading the compressor wheel instead of doing a full turbo swap. However, that's when they said that if I wanted to make BIG power for the money, to look into the Powerlab ST kit (which I believe just made 8xxwhp by one shop). They really suggested I try and sell my kit online before my motor gets back this week, and worst case scenario i'd have to stick with my TN kit.
In your opinion, is the 62-1 worth the $$ (i've already paid for it, so if i decide no not go that route it'll just be a price difference), or should I simply upgrade the compressor wheel (i've already upgraded the wastegate to tial) and push that kit as far as I can? Thanks

Can you specify what you paid for when you say 62-1? If you got a 62-1 with an F1 T3 Stage 5 turbine wheel then yes its worth it. Reason being is that you are getting a larger compressor wheel capable of an honest 10-15% increased flow PLUS a turbine wheel which is better designed than the original.

I've paid for it, but not ordered it yet. I'd given SP a down payment on all parts prior to the build (1300.00 for the 62-1)...I've been waiting for my built motor to return, but now that we've encountered this "problem", I've been deciding to either sell my TN kit and put the 1300.00 to a new kit (such as the powerlab) or keep it. However i'd much rather stick with TN and go with a bigger turbo with the proper compression wheel. The one I planned on ordering was the 62-1 fullsize/ stage 5 .63 A/R. Does this turbo (and my existing kit), have the potential for 600whp, or is it unwise to go bigger due to the lagginess and possible loss of power? Its not necessarily the obvious increase in flow in terms of turbos, but if it will go to any use due to the restricted downpipe. Thanks

I think if you like at the power delivery in the dyno sheets from GTM and talk to the owner of that car Gus who is very honest about his car you will see that the power isn't going to waste. You might consider asking Turbonetics to build you a 62-1 turbo with an F1 Stage 5 turbine which would require a machined out turbine housing to fit on the 350Z but should flow a lot better on hot side. Regardless I wouldn't take anyones word who hasn't paid for it personally. I mean I can tell you in numbers and technical terms what the car is capable of but if you want to really get a first hand lay persons view PM Gus "Red_Hot_Z" on my350z.com i'm sure he will happily give you his opinion.

I'll definitely shoot him a PM...Im really coming down to the wire and have to make a final decision either way. Ill definitely post my ultimate decision, and power numbers once they come. Thanks
