Default Need help: shaft play and blown seal

Rob,

What would the rebuild roughly cost? How long would it take?

I can hear what seems to be shaft play and the car is smoking constantly...blown seal? This happened during a lapping event last Friday. I have had the Turbonetics 02-03 Nissan Sentra Turbo Kit for a bit over two years and about 15,000 miles. Bit disappointed at the lack of reliability on the T3/T4E turbo.

Thanks.

Vinh

Rebuilds start at $150 and go up depending on what is needed. Do you have the water cooled bearing housing on your turbo?

I have the earlier unit with just oil cooling, no water cooling.

My oil pressure is normal (60-80 PSI) so I know the oil is getting to the turbo. I have an external oil cooler setup as well so the oil temperature is normal (180-220F). I am running the 9PSI spring that comes with the kit so boost is safe max at 0.56 bar. A/F ratio is 14.7 off boost and 11.3-11.5 at WOT.

Is this the case of blown seal causing reduced oil lubrication to the shaft leading to bearing failure?

Thanks for your help.

That's possible but I will say that Turbonetics has moved those units for that application to water cooled bearing to combat any issues with heat causing premature failure. If you contact customer support at 805-581-0333 they can get you a WA for your turbo.
