Swapping cold side on Ball bearing turbo....
Hello there,
I have a Turbonetics Ball Bearing turbo that was bought new in 2008. It is on a lightly used weekend fun car and still in great shape. Specifically a Volvo 2.3 liter 4 cylinder motor in a 740 sedan.
I have recently been doing some work to optimize the combo and make some more usable power. I'd like to somehow move from the current turbo, a t3/t4e 60 trim to a 50 trim unit. I've just had better luck with the 50 trim compressor on these motors in terms of quick spool and efficient power. I'm just not getting what I want out of the 60 trim.
What parts do I need to do a cold side swap on these Ceramic Ball Bearing turbos? Can I buy them direct from Turbonetics?
Thanks,
-Ken

The key challenge will be that the unit needs to be rebalanced when you swap the compressor wheel. As such you'll need to send it in to Turbonetics to have the wheel swapped.

OK. makes sense. I have done a few vanilla Garretts with turine shafts and compressor wheels that are balanced individually. I never needed to rebalance those. Does this make sense economically then? Or is it better to just sell the 60 trim and buy a 50 if I want to make this change.

It's probably still cheaper to send it back to Turbonetics to have the wheel replaced and rebalanced. You can get accurate price info on that from the Service team at 805-581-0333
