Default Please help me identify if this is F1 wheel..pics inside

Hi. I purchased this turbo used. Serial number is T-23627 which shows a journal bearing turbo with an S-trim wheel. I had a local turbonetics dealer approved shop look at it and they say it is not an S-trim wheel since thier S-trim exhaust housings didn't fit it. They also said it is a ball bearing turbo, not a journal bearing because of the drilled hole in the oil drain port. I have attached a pic and I just want an opinion on if this is the new F1 wheel or no?

As you can see, it's in rough shape and will need a rebuild. If this is in fact an F1 wheel, what would the replacement cost on this run? Bearing seems smooth and turbo is in good shape, it's just the wheel that took some damage. Anyways, thanks!

Can't tell from that pic alone but the F1 wheels have 10 blade turbines. If it has more than that it's not an F1 turbine wheel. That serial number comes up as:

T_SE-SB-H76-D-D-SS-TUND0_81

which means T Series T76, Standard bearing (not ball bearing), S trim turbine wheel with a tangential undivided .81 A/R housing

It does in fact have 10 blades. I think it was upgraded at some point because it is also a ball bearing turbo. It has the 1/8" pin hole in the oil drain area where you can see the shiny bearing.

Do the S-trim older style wheels have more than 10 blades? I just really want to know if this is actually an F1 wheel because if so I'd like to have the turbo rebuilt. Any help you can give I'd greatly appreciate it!

The older turbine wheels were 11 blade units. 10 blade wheels means F1. Getting it rebuilt usually starts at $250 and goes up depending on what needs to be replaced. I would start with a call to the service team at 805-581-0333 and get a WA number. They can get the unit back, inspect it, and quote you out on a rebuild.

One more quick question for ya. I am basically 100% sure I have the F1 wheel in my turbo. I couldn't help but notice that in the sticky thread with the comparison pics of the new F1 wheel vs the old style wheel, they both had 10 blades. I know you mentioned that the older style had 11 blades though, so I'm just a bit confused on that. Maybe this thread can help others out that have similiar questions as well.

Also....just for the heck of it, do you know the measurements of the wheel diameter and fin height for the .68 F1 wheel? I may borrow a dial caliper from a freind just to be completely sure thats what I have.

The smaller turbine wheels F1-54, 57, 62, etc used to be 11 blade wheels (as did the old Q trim) and were completely redesigned into F1 series wheels with 10 blades. The F1-68 and S trim both always had 10 blades but the F1-68 has a slightly different blade profile.

Ok. That makes sense since mine does in fact have a .68 wheel in it. I had borrowed a dial caliper and measured it yesterday. Accross the top of the fins (minor dia.) it measured in at 2.67 exactly, which should be an F1 wheel.

I will be sending it in for a rebuild soon since I had the woman in cust service e-mail me the paperwork for the RMA. Thanks again Robert!
