Default New Turbo,Scraping Compressor Housing Bad

WOW....Finally got my car back together(92 Shadow ES Turbo),after being financially held up for a year, and the wheel is scraping the compressor housing BAD...!!!

Turbo is a brand new Turbonetics Super 60 that I aquired about a year ago from Ebay...Brand new...was even still in the turbonetics box.

Turbo was not installed by me,was installed by my brother, who is a class A and ASE certified mechanic, and has had his 11.89 quarter mile shadow in the mag High Performance Mopar...!!!...

A new Braided oil supply was used, bought from a vendor in the turbododge community, and a new stock oil return line,5\8" from the same vendor was used.No water cooling in this turbo.

Oil was changed before first start, and distributor unhooked and oil return line from turbo unhooked, cranked over until oil was passing through the turbo.Hooked lines and distributor up,fired right up....all was good...ran for a bit....all looks good, lets go for a drive.

Upon first time trying for a little boost on test drive, very distinct scraping upon spool up.Go back to the garage, pull the filter hose off, shaft now has QUITE a bit of play, when had zero before, and can see the marks on the compressor housing.

I just wanted to cry...LOL....just parked it and left...this was last night.

As of yet,we haven't pulled the tubo back out yet...next couple of days hopefully...and hopefully we can get it out without having to pull the head all off again...i'm confident

Because it was bought off Ebay, and the fact that I know i've had it for a year,I know there is no warranty...which is just my luck...as i'm 32,have a wife and two kids, and just wanted a reasonably low cost fast car.

Any help is appeciated.

Here is a pic of the turbo

Greg.

Do you know if the Ebay seller was an authorized dealer? Can you provide the serial number of the unit?

It should be on the compressor backplate. It should start with a T-. Something like T-234567

I wanted to check the actual ship date of the unit to make sure you were out of warranty. If you are and you don't know the prior owner well enough to have him send it in for you for warranty than you are kind of out of luck on this. Keep in mind that the shaft play could have been caused from banging around during shipment or who knows what else. You can look at rebuilding the unit although honestly I would consider a new turbo at this point. The cost is not that much more for a brand new T3 Super 60 and you get a full 1 year warranty.

Still haven't gotten it off yet...

Ok Robert,if I do get the original buyer to send it in,and it is out of warranty, but you can tell it is indeed brand new and only been on a vehicle for 10 minutes,do you think turbonetics would cover it...???....I've been in contact with him.

When he bought it,and then I bought it,it came with the compressor and turbine housings attatched,so can't see it being damaged in shipping.

The mechanic that installed it,and he's dealt with turbo's,says,to him it was like a major unbalanced problem. Was the compressor housing getting rubbed, not the turbine housing,my mistake.

I just can't get over this major purchase only lasting the test drive.Like I say,by looking at it,even removing the compressor and turbine housings, its a brand new turbo.

Reading this guys thread, and your answer,i'm crossing my fingers...LOL

Turbo sat in the engine bay outside for a year without being used, do you think it is ok to use for a custom Scion tC app?

Seeing as how it was never used if something is wrong with it Turbonetics may be able to take care of you. Get it on the car and if there is an issue give Reggie a buzz and I'm sure he can do something for you..
Thanks again Roger....

Well I can't make any promises on the unit because technically if its been over 12 months the warranty is gone but like I said before lets get the unit off and give the support guys a shout and see if they can do anything for you.
