basically new turbo.... funny noises and some shaft play/
Well I installed my Then brand new Turbonetics T3/T4 .48ar hotside journal bearing turbo about 2 weeks ago..... was a great step up from the chinese crapocharger that lasted me about a year until the seal on the compressor blew....
Now, after 2 weeks, it seems that there is some shaft play (side to side) and the turbo is making a metal on metal noise sometimes. It's rather disconcerting! I checked my oil supply lines, and everything seems fine, no kinks or anything..... so It couldn't be oil starvation. I followed the correct install procedures (I've done this more than once in the past)
Thing is, the turbo was a gift from my uncle.... I don't have any reciepts or anything, and I don't believe he does either (not even sure where he got it). It was brand new when installed, still sealed up and everything...
What to do ? I don't want to drive the car with the turbo being possible screwed up (last thing I need is shards of compressor blade in my motor ya know?) There aren't any marks from contact and the blades spin freely....
Thanks for the help!

I will get the serial tomorrow morning, the car is sitting at the shop that does my tuning work right now.... Would the serial # be on the box it came in?

It should be. If not it would be on the compressor backplate.

It seems that the Turbo was originally purchased from Treadstone Performance inc.
here are the numbers
C/O# 45837
serial # is T-23399
M/O # is M282870
seems its a T3/T4B V trim stage 2 .48AR(turbine).... nifty

OK if thats the case give Treadstone a call and if the turbo is still in warranty they should be able to help you out.

I am speaking with treadstone over e-mail right now. unfortunately it seems that the turbo may not have been purchased directly form them by my uncle, but that he may have been the 2nd purchaser of the turbo.
That would be my luck exactly!

treadstone seems to be unable to help me. Seems my uncle purchased the unit from the person who originally purchased it from treadstone, gave it to me, and now it has blown..... Man my luck is just wonderful huh?
What would cause the turbo to begin this type of failure? The only thing I can think of is oil starvation, but having no oil supply issues or drain issues, I can't see this being the case!?!?!

It could have been from a lot of things. If the unit was surged before or shipped improperlly. There's a ton of reasons it could be failed. Without knowing the histroy of the unit its hard to tell for sure.

Ok, so what are my options at this point? I'd rather not have to buy a completely new turbo!
