Talking Bisimoto's Turbo build: Quest for 700whp 1.6L WagoVan

For years, I have focused on naturally aspirated performance. I loved, and still do love, the challenge of sailing in uncharted waters, and extracting what was seen as impossible power.

Last year, Bisimoto Engineering participated in a high profile, magazine engine challenge/shootout, to determine which shop could produce the most HP/litre in a streetable, unleaded fuel engine. Cosworth, and I opted for all motor builds, as a torture test was promised for the engines, and the units had to fit in a factory chassis. Long story, short, other competitors with boosted setups faired very well in the competition, and even though Bisimoto with a 360 hp Honda F22A engine placed better than Cosworth, we did not win the event.

At the award ceremony, I was approached by an employee of the winning team, and asked why we chose to run n/a. I simply answered that we wanted to build an engine in the true spirit of the competition: a reliable, streetable, chassis friendly engine. I guess that answer was not good enough, as he responded, "didn't you build all motor, because that is all you know?"

I quickly shared that n/a is quite difficult, and that we have built, and tuned customers boosted engines for years, and frankly, it was not as challenging. He chuckled and walked away saying, "yea, all motor is all you know".

Well, after that interaction, I promptly walked over to Jonathan Wong of SuperStreet magazine, and shared with him my new desire:
To build the most powerful street, small displacement Honda ever...in a Wagovan (just to be absurd). It would not be a dyno queen, but a car that will be driven, to and from events, shows, meets and...the supermarket.

In the spirit of this being a driven vehicle, multiple gauges is not appealing to me at all. That is where the AEM serial gauge comes in. This allows up to 19 user programmable channels, allowing me to see what the AEM Gen 2 6040 sees..and includes 2 pin guides for scrolling through. My parameters of choice:

Oil pressure
Fuel pressure
Oxygen sensor readings
Boost/vacuum
Water temp
Air temp

It also allows 24 multicolored LED lights, with alarms incase things get hairy.

In the name of stealth, I decided to mount it in the centre console...in front of the shifter.

First hole drilled, for ease:

Now followed up with a 2" hole saw:

Almost done:

Voila:

Now to deburr the unsightly:

Smooth:

AEM 30-4300:

Slid in perfectly:

Now all the way in, and secured from the rear with supplied holder:

Going back in:

In place:

Thanks, Turbo, yes thay are ceramic coated 9:1 arias pistons.

Flywheel that I had been using for like 2 years in the same wagon daily driven! Hahaha. SERIOUSLY. And it still has plenty of life. The BISIMOTO flywheel is made of aircraft quality 6061 Aluminum, and the friction plate is heat-treated. What does that mean? The flywheel lasts two years even with me beating on it. Haha.

Random. Yes, I do work on my own cars, contrary to rumor. lol

Motor in.

Taking care of the shift linkage, etc.

Turbo manifold on. LOOK at that thing, it is beasty.

Putting the TURBONETICS/Spearco FMIC on.

Look at the fitment. Tight, but perfect.

Here are a couple pics of the chassis:

Rear interior with fresh paint and weatherproofing.

AEM Water/Methanol injection kit.

Here is a parting front shot.

More pics to come, thanks for looking.

Dude that build is awesome. I would ABSOLUTELY leave that thing looking as stock as possible. It would be the most ridiculous sleeper EVER. Excellent work and I can't wait to see the results.

Thank you, Robert.

The AEM fuel rail, coupled with the Golden eagle intake manifold placed the AEM fuel pressure regulator's fuel outlet in a postion that would prove difficult to plump the return line. To solve this, Golden eagle has a 90 degree relocation module. This cnc aluminum piece gives a 90 deg redirection of the regulator for an easier line route, in our case:

After the aforementioned mod, off to Bonaco in Upland the Bisimoto Wagon went, for the full -an hosing treatment:

After all the plumbing was done, in went the radiator cooling fluids and Torco TBO 40 Premium break-in oil. Torco TBO is recommended to be run for 30 minutes or longer on new or rebuilt engines for racing, high performance or street applications; extremely good for running in engines prior to switching to synthetic based motor oils:

Torco TBO Premium Break-in Oil is a blend of hydro-processed petroleum base stocks that clean and prepare new surfaces in our D16Z6 engine. Since the first start up of a new engine is critical to its life expectancy, TBO utilizes specially selected additives in order to protect vital engine parts during the first startup. TBO cleansing agents “scrub down” any contaminants left in new engines from the build process and assure good cleansing of the freshly machined parts. Using protective anti-wear chemistry allows mating surfaces to gently make contact during first new startup.

Torco TBO provides the proper film for new bearing protection and is made to withstand viscosity break down in order to maintain an amazing hydrodynamic wedge. Torco TBO contains a high percentage of “Zinc” anti-wear chemistry for proper valve train and new Bisimoto 3.6 cam break-in protection. I have used the TBO exclusively in all my builds, and the oil drains so dirty after the 1st dyno session, or so. Works impeccably well with less that a 2% ring leak down after less than one hour. I was very skeptical at first a few years ago when I experimented with it, but to my chagrin, it worked/works extremely well!!

More pics to come!

A shot of the sandwich plate and the AEM electric oil pressure gauge. The sandwich plate is also a source for clean oil supply to the Bisimoto/Turbonetics turbo. The basemap that I built for the AEM EMS Series 2 will allow me to log, and view oil pressure readings.

In the name of weight savings, I employed the use of 3.5" 6061 aluminum piping, purchased from Burns Stainless.

Aluminum exhaust systems have amazing burst strength. This is a good shot of the third "anti-lag safe" oxygen sensor:

Another shot, with pep-boys axles...for now:

The EF/EE chassis have a strange configuration for the exhaust system pathway. I wanted something straight forward, and chose what you see below. This allows a conducive path for the expelled gases, and the rear control arms do not contact the 3.5 inch tube with full suspension travel. My muffler of choice, the Burns Stainless 2-stage stainless steel muffler:

The Burns' new 2-Stage (2S) mufflers provide additional sound attenuation, and is remarkably light weight and extremely durable. I saw this unit when I visited the Burns facility, and loved the unit at first sight. I even loved it more when I saw some C5 corvette data. This muffler gives an additional 5-7 decibel reduction in noise, without power loss. The units have very interesting vanes and mesh membranes. It does look quite deliciously strange from the rear:

I need to try and get some idling vids up. Time to break this puppy in.

Here are some close-up pics of the Burns Stainless 2-stage muffler:

Looks really mean in real life:

The one on the Bisimoto wagon is shown on the far right, with a 3.5" inlet and outlet:
